We’ve all been there. A band or artist we listen to suddenly grows up and their sound matures. At first, we’re not sure if we’ll like it. Then we hear it for the first time and at that moment we instantly either hate it or love it. It either is the next natural progression in their music you would wanted to see or it’s something completely different then you ever expected or cared to listen to.
The reason I bring this up is because today a band which I didn’t frequently listen t0 released their sophomore release and it is completely different then anything they have ever done. I remember when they released their first full length album back in 2008 because I went out and bought it (I thought they would end up being extremely popular and wanted to beat the rush). In the end, I ended up not being that impressed with the album and only listened to it on occasion. Who am I talking about anyway? The Maine.
Today, The Maine released a new album titled “Black and White” which as I mentioned is a completely new (and mature) sound from their previous stuff. I like it. I like it better then the old. And the more I listen the more I like it. They even have a song on the album titled “Growing Up” which is obviously fitting. I’m impressed with their new album, it completely caught me off-guard. To see the difference, here is a link to their old album [iTunes].
Can you think of any bands or artists that you listen to that made dramatic changes to their sound? Leave a comment.
Some others that I can think of off the top of my head:
Panic! At the Disco’s sophomore album Pretty. Odd. (which I didn’t like at all, except for one or two songs).
When Tom DeLonge started Angels & Airwaves which was completely new and different than blink-182.
